Experience Ceramics
With CAMP SUMMERS USA

Working as a ceramics specialist counselor at a summer camp in the United States is an opportunity to bring creativity, calm, and artistic expression to the experience of children and teenagers. Modeling clay allows campers to disconnect from their routine, experiment with their hands, and discover that a simple idea can become a unique piece. As a specialist, you will create a welcoming space where each participant can learn, try out techniques, and develop confidence in their artistic ability. Ceramics does not require prior experience: it can be as appealing to those who enjoy art as to those looking for a quiet activity among sports and outdoor adventures. Your enthusiasm will make the workshop a special moment of the day.

Teach Ceramics to your Campers

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include planning projects appropriate to the group’s ages, preparing the clay, tools, and work areas, and explaining techniques progressively. You will be able to teach hand modeling, making bowls, figures, reliefs, textures, decorative pieces, slabs, small containers, and themed projects related to the camp. Depending on the available facilities, you could also work with paint, glazes, or finishing processes, always following the program’s rules. You will need to present clear examples, break each project down into simple steps, and offer individual help when someone needs guidance. Time management will be important, since some pieces require drying, storage, or preparation before the next phase of the process.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

People with experience in ceramics, visual arts, design, art education, or hands-on activities are valued. Patience, attention to detail, organization, and the ability to explain processes in a clear and approachable way are also important. Each camp defines its own needs, but a creative and responsible attitude will always be a great asset. During the summer, you will use English in real situations, live with an international team, and develop skills such as leadership, planning, and intercultural communication. If you enjoy working with your hands and want to help young people discover their creativity, being a ceramics counselor in the United States can be an experience that is as enriching as it is inspiring.

SAFETY FIRST

Ceramics promotes concentration, coordination, and patience, but it also offers a very personal way of expressing oneself. Campers learn that a piece does not have to be perfect to be valuable and that small mistakes can become creative details. As a counselor, you will be able to encourage participants to experiment with shapes, colors, and textures, respecting their own pace and ideas. Shared projects can also strengthen cooperation, for example by creating a mural, an installation, or a collection of pieces to decorate a space at the camp. The satisfaction of seeing a finished creation helps improve self-esteem and teaches that perseverance has results. Your role will be to recognize effort and celebrate the diversity of ideas.
